Signs of Cancer in Dogs to Watch For

Did you know that cancer is the leading cause of death for dogs over the age of 10?

It’s important to be aware of your furry friend’s everyday health. But it’s also important to track and take action when you notice changes in their behavior, energy, and areas of their body.

As with cancer in humans, pets have the most success for treatment and remission if cancer is caught early in its development.

Luckily, there are common signs to look out for in your dog that can be indicators of illness or cancer.

According to the Animal Cancer Foundation, here are the top signs of cancer in dogs. If you see these signs you should contact your veterinarian.

  • Swollen lymph nodes: Lymph node glands are located throughout the body but are most easily detected behind the jaw or the knees of your dog.

  • An enlarged or changing lump: Any lump that rapidly grows or changes in texture or shape

  • Distended abdomen: When the abdomen becomes rapidly enlarged, this could suggest a mass or tumor in the abdomen, and could even indicate internal bleeding.

  • Excessive weight loss: Rapid weight loss that is not explained by a weight loss diet.

  • Frequent vomiting or diarrhea: Unexplained and frequent vomiting or diarrhea.

  • Bleeding: Bleeding from the dog’s mouth, nose, gums, or in the urine or stool.

  • Lameness: Loss of function in the legs, or limping,  especially in large breed dogs.

  • Straining to urinate: Straining to urinate and blood in the urine.

  • Bad breath: Difficulty chewing, dropping food when eating, or bad breath.

Illnesses and cases of cancer caught early have a better chance of responding to treatment.
